Shopping
In recent years, there has been a blossoming of retail in Austin.
On the one hand, national giants have emerged from the Austin area,
such as Whole Foods Market and Dell Computer, on the other hand,
the personal and unique has flourished. Small, local merchants present
a dazzling array of arts, crafts, collectibles, folk art, funk,
vintage items and antiques.
Home to one of Austin's liveliest shopping districts is South Congress
Avenue, south of Town Lake in south Central Austin. For many years,
the shops and businesses along the street decayed but today the
area is flourishing. You'll find funky furnishing stores, resale
shops featuring vintage clothing and folk art shops - some staying
open in the night hours to give the avenue an after-dark vitality.
Not far from the South Congress shopping district is South Lamar
Boulevard, where the city's really funky stores can be found. Vintage
clothing stores, antique stores and several thrift stores are located
on this road to the Capitol building.
What is currently emerging as the hippest shopping district in Austin
is the nexus of West Sixth and North Lamar Blvd., with Whole Foods
Market at its heart. Founded more than twenty years ago as a natural
foods store by a couple of hippies, it now serves as the anchor
of the country's largest natural foods grocery empire. This area
is packed with small stores and emporiums designed to lead the walking
shopper from door to door.
Home of Austin's second biggest tourists draw, Central Market lies
east of Mopac along 35th Street flowing into 38th Street and then
north on Lamar Blvd. to Central Park. Central Market, is an extraordinary
grocery store surrounded by shops dedicated to excellence, be it
in gardening or clock repair, pasta making, clothes design or the
art of photography. Austin residents know this is where they can
find some of the finest shops in the city.
To the northwest, along U. S. Highway 183 is the Arboretum, the
Rodeo Drive of Austin. This is where some of the top merchandising
names in the country have a foothold. Back in the city is The Drag,
the section of Guadalupe Street that runs alongside the University
of Texas campus. All things Longhorn are sold at souvenir shops
mixed in with hip fashion stores, Vietnamese egg roll stands and
old hippie vendors.
These listings are filled with stores of all kinds, offering a variety
of shopping experiences to discover and enjoy.
