Golf and Country Clubs

If you like playing golf, then you’ll love Austin, Texas. With a mild climate and a wonderful natural environment it was only to be expected that Austin would become a golfer’s town. The first course in the state of Texas was Hancock Golf Course, now a municipal course on 41st street. Austin’s appreciation for the sport of golf was further enriched by the local legend Harvey Penick. Harvey taught here at UT and was a veritable one-man institution at Austin Country Club. He helped to cultivate the talents of two other local golf legends Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite and was said to be giving golf instruction from his bedside in an Austin hospital shortly before his death.

With Penick, Crenshaw and Kite leading the charge, development in Austin has produced some of the most beautiful and challenging courses in the nation. Today, Austin offers dozens of municipal, public, semiprivate and private courses. Listed below are the private courses and country clubs.
